Community Access Pricing: Practical Help for Iowa Families
Protecting your relationship with your children should not depend on whether you can afford standard attorney fees. At Iowa River Legal, our Community Access Pricing (CAP) program offers reduced flat fees for qualifying households—including families who earn too much for free legal aid but still face real barriers to hiring an attorney.
CAP clients receive the same attorney, preparation, and advocacy. The difference is the fee.
How Pricing Works
CAP considers your household’s annual income before taxes and the number of people in your household. Using the federal poverty guidelines as a baseline, qualifying clients receive:
40% off our standard flat fee for household income at or below 150% of the guidelines.
30% off our standard flat fee for household income above 150% and up to 200%.
20% off our standard flat fee for household income above 200% and up to 250%.
Your household generally includes you, a spouse or partner living with you, and children or other dependents living in your home. We review income information during the application process and confirm your eligibility and exact fee in writing.
If your income is slightly above the limit, you are still welcome to ask. Circumstances such as a recent job loss or substantial medical expenses may be considered.
What Matters Are Covered?
CAP is available for certain family law matters, including establishing custody and parenting time, modifying existing custody or support orders, responding to another parent’s petition, establishing or modifying child support, and paternity actions.
Emergency or expedited hearings, appeals, contempt actions, and criminal matters are outside this program. Contact our office to discuss other pricing options for those services.
What Your Flat Fee Covers
Your CAP fee covers representation through mediation or an agreed resolution, including reviewing your case, preparing the necessary petition or response, communicating with the other party or their attorney, preparing for and attending mediation, and drafting settlement documents and a proposed court order.
Court filing fees, service costs, mediator fees, and expenses for experts, depositions, or other outside services are separate. If trial becomes necessary, we discuss that additional work and its cost before beginning trial preparation. Reduced pricing is also available for that stage.
Interest-Free Payment Plans
CAP clients can begin with 25% of their agreed fee down and pay the remaining balance in monthly installments without interest. We establish your payment schedule together and include it in your engagement agreement. Once that agreement is signed, your CAP fee is locked in even if your income changes.

Availability depends on eligibility, a conflict check, and our current caseload. Existing signed fee agreements remain unchanged.
